Greener Grounds Project

Transforming the Willow Ridge community space into a multi-generational, accessible gathering place that brings nature and neighbours together year-round.

what is the greener Grounds project?

The Greener Grounds Project transforms our underused ball diamond into a vibrant, multi-generational community hub that responds to climate change while serving all ages and abilities. Through extensive community engagement, we’ve designed a space that addresses our community’s environmental challenges and recreational needs.

What we're building:

Our current space is a large, open field with no shade, shelter, or play features that community members describe as “a waste of space” and “doesn’t invite involvement.” We’re reimagining it as an inclusive, accessible gathering place featuring:

  • Sloped landscaping and natural play elements
  • Accessible picnic areas and community shelter
  • Interconnected pathways (floodable in winter to extend our ice rink)
  • Large caliper trees for essential shade and climate resilience
  • Parking lot expansion to better serve our facility users
  • Addition of Bioswales to mitigate storm drain run off and retain moisture

What Your Neighbours said:

“No trees. No covered space to picnic. Not enough protection from the elements.”

“It is largely an unusable space for the community. Would like to see picnic areas or gathering space of some kind.”

“Would love a pavilion with BBQ and tables for groups to share a meal.”

“Feels like a nice expanse of grass to look at, but doesn’t invite involvement.”
